Baboo, Guests & Experiences

Guest experiences are woven into the story of this place. Writers, artists, and travellers arrive with their own rhythms and leave behind traces—thoughts recorded, work begun, moments noticed. Some share reflections on their stay, others respond through creative work, but all contribute to a growing record of lived experience.

“My years in my little studio in the House of All Sorts, under Emily’s roof have been precious to me. Having a safe, dedicated art space to work in has helped mature my growth as an artistand as a personEvery time I open that old wooden door with itssolid skeleton key, I step into a cheerful room of possibilities. I’ve been inspired by Emily’s presence here too, as if she’s just stepped out of view around a corner.

At times her fierce spirit speaks to me across time, admonishing me to get to work! Her mentorship has been a gift to my work, and she has been a muse since childhood. Her influence is such that when I once asked my landlord, and current owner, Peter Williswhy did he open the room to an artist he barely knew, he saidBecause knew Emily would have liked it.’

I will always be grateful to the Willis family for so generously making this possible.

An exceptional location with historic significance

“An amazing experience with a host who respects and treasures the historic significance of this location – Emily Carr’s actual studio /home. Beyond words in every respect.”

An amazing experience

“Beautiful historic home/studio of an important artist in our province. The information about the home and the artist was so available and shared so kindly by our host!”

Perfect and beautiful!

“Absolutely stunning historic suite. The light was so beautiful all times of day. Simple and tastefully furnished. Everything you need. We are going to book for next year immediately, I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else. The location by Beacon Hill park and 2 blocks to the ocean, and 10-15 minutes to downtown (walking) was amazing.”

Wow what an experience!

“There’s something to be said about staying at a historic and cultural significant place. Yes the outside is not at all what you would expect but the studio makes up for it. The light from the large north facing windows, the location to downtown and the Carr house, the horse trolleys that clop outside the window all add to the charm and personality of The House of All Sorts. Really is one of the most memorable places I’ve stayed at. The kitchen was fully stocked. Everything was super clean. I appreciate how the furnishing was in line with the era but has all the modern amenities one would expect. I highly highly recommend staying here if you have the chance.”

Beautiful Historic Studio

“Even that wonderful old library smell was incredibly comforting. This was one of the most beautiful and magical places we have stayed, not to mention the famous Emily Carr’s house of all sorts! My husband and son stayed here for 2 nights and found it to be just what we expected – a look into history. From the huge window that overlooks the yard and beautiful cedar tree, to the mysterious attack doors above the shelving that piques your curiosity – this place was so unique! Such an honour to stay here! Would highly recommend if you’re ever in Victoria and want to be taken back into historic James Bay!”
